Police sources at Al-Hussein Hospital said that the fire broke out due to a spark from faulty electrical wires reaching the oxygen tanks, which caused them to explode.
A health worker told Reuters on Monday, before entering the burning building, that the fire had trapped many patients in the ward designated for Corona patients, and that rescuers had difficulty getting there.
On Tuesday, rescue teams used a heavy crane to remove the charred and molten remains of a part of the city’s Hussein Hospital designated to treat patients infected with the Corona virus, while relatives of the victims were gathering nearby.
A paramedic at the hospital, whose work ended on Monday, hours before the fire broke out, said that the absence of basic security and safety measures meant that the accident would have occurred at any time. “The hospital does not have an extinguishing system, not even a fire alarm,” he added.
Two officials said that the death toll includes the remains of 21 charred bodies, whose identities have not yet been identified. Ibrahim Saleh on Twitter, “The tragedy of Al-Hussein Hospital and before that, Ibn Al-Khatib Hospital in Baghdad, is the product of entrenched corruption and mismanagement that underestimates the lives of Iraqis and prevents the reform of the performance of institutions.” He added, “The difficult investigation and accountability for the negligent is the consolation of our martyrs and their families. A strict review of the performance of institutions and the protection of citizens is necessary.”
Officials added that more than 100 people were injured in the fire that broke out on Monday evening at the hospital in Nasiriyah.
In April, a similar explosion at a hospital in Baghdad treating Covid-19 patients killed at least 82 and injured 110 others.
This will not be the last hospital in which a fire occurs due to corruption, neglect and failure to prepare hospitals and institutions in a safe manner. All authorities are responsible for what happened, and as happened before in the incident of Ibn Al-Khatib Hospital when more than 80 people were burned alive, the matter will be forgotten and the fire systems in the rest of the hospitals will not be repaired, and the only loser is the people Iraqi .
